Build a richer product configurator

Documentation for development version 0.1.0-alpha.19.

The following controls belong to the current local Pro candidate. They are not yet available in the public package; final visual checks and release verification remain open.

Let customers select several illustrated extras

Add an Image or Color field, then enable Allow multiple selections. Enter the minimum and maximum selections. A maximum of 0 allows all listed choices; a required field still needs at least one selection. Give every choice a readable label, even when its image or color already looks descriptive.

Use Included selections to include the cheapest selected choices without an extra charge. For example, with one included selection and extras priced at 1, 3 and 4, selecting all three adds 7 per item: the 1 extra is included. Selection order does not change the price. An optional field-level configuration fee is separate from the included-choice allowance.

Test the smallest and largest valid selections, then try one below and above the limits. Check the cart at quantity two as well as one. Each selected extra keeps its own label and economic snapshot for the order/report.

Request a date and preferred time

Choose Date and time, set the allowed date range and the shop time zone. Enter allowed times separated by commas, such as 09:00, 10:30, 14:00. Leave the list empty to allow any minute. The saved display includes the time zone.

This is a preferred-time field. It does not reserve appointment capacity, prevent two customers choosing the same slot, or manage a booking calendar. Times that do not exist during a daylight-saving transition are rejected.

Add explanations and custom colors

Use Section heading, Information text and Divider to organize the configurator. These fields cannot be required and cannot add a price. Information text is plain text, not an HTML editor.

Use Custom color to let the customer choose a color or enter a six-digit HEX value, such as #AABBCC. Unlike a Color choice field, this is not a fixed merchant palette. It does not automatically recolor a product photograph.

Sell accessories from the catalog

Add Linked products, search for each accessory, and set its units per main product. Choose simple products or fully specified variations. The customer chooses one accessory from that field; use separate fields for independent accessory choices.

Prices come from the current WooCommerce catalog. The accessory is a separate cart/order line with its own taxes, shipping characteristics and stock. Do not add the same accessory price again as a fixed option fee. For a main product priced at 20 and an accessory priced at 7 with two units per main product, buying two main products gives 40 plus four accessories at 7: 68 before applicable taxes and discounts.

Changing the main quantity updates the accessory quantity. Removing the main item removes its accessories. Customers cannot independently change an attached accessory quantity. Insufficient stock rejects the configuration; it does not silently drop the accessory. Accessories that themselves require configuration need separate integration testing and must not bypass their required fields.

Show a live design preview

In the group editor, choose a Product preview background. Add text or image layers and select an existing source field. Position and size values are percentages of the background; keep each layer inside its boundaries. Later layers appear over earlier layers.

For an engraving, connect a text field and position its layer over the printable area. For artwork, connect an Image choice field. The preview uses the customer's normalized text and merchant-provided images. Use the Preview tab and test the real product page at mobile size.

This preview is illustrative. It does not generate print-ready files, render a 3D product, or overlay customer-uploaded files. A background image plus text layer does not imply those capabilities.

Keep the selected product photo through purchase

Set a choice's product image when the choice should replace the gallery photo. The local candidate supports standard simple and variable product galleries. Removing the choice restores the current variation image. With several selected image-changing choices, the last one in the merchant's configured order wins.

The selected media reference is stored with the order. Cart/Blocks data and order product images use it; Woo email templates show it when product images are enabled. Later changes to the option do not rewrite historical order references. If that attachment is deleted, the native product photo is the fallback. This is a chosen photograph, not a generated composite-preview file.

Ask for an amount or a formatted value

For an extra amount chosen by the customer, add a Number field and select Customer-entered extra in pricing. Set Minimum extra amount and Maximum extra amount in the store currency. These bounds replace the ordinary number-field bounds while this mode is active. Mark the field required if it must not be skipped.

The amount is added to the base price for each purchased item. A base price of 20 and an entered amount of 12.50 give 32.50 per item, or 65 for two items. This mode does not replace the entire product price or create a donation payment flow.

Email address, Website address and Phone number fields validate their formats on the server. Website addresses must use HTTP or HTTPS. Phone numbers allow an initial plus sign, digits, spaces, parentheses, dots and dashes; at least five digits are required. These checks do not verify ownership of an email address or whether a telephone number exists.

Change a configuration from the cart

Click Edit options under the configured item. The product page opens with the stored choices and quantity. Change the options, wait for the price calculation, then select Update cart configuration. Cancel and return to cart leaves the previous line unchanged.

The original quantity is read-only in this form; change quantity in the cart. If another tab changes the quantity before you save, reopen the editor from the current cart. Identical configurations can merge into one line using WooCommerce's normal cart identity.

A failed edit keeps the previous configuration. Invalid fields receive specific messages; unavailable accessories may produce a general availability error. An existing upload is retained unless replaced, and the server rechecks its ownership and context. Browser verification of the upload-edit workflow is still pending for this candidate.

Modal presentation and Free fallback

In the local expansion candidate, In a modal is a Pro presentation option. Free displays the setting as unavailable in the group editor. If a saved group already uses a modal and Pro is absent, its supported fields appear directly on the product page instead. The saved presentation preference is retained and resumes when Pro is active again. Required fields and purchase validation are not removed by this presentation fallback. Groups containing other unavailable Pro field types or pricing still require their providers; this does not convert those features into Free.
